Texas State University in San Marcos and Aquarena Center encourage water lovers of all ages, school students, scouts, divers, ‘future’ divers, and the Central Texas communities to attend ‘Aqua fest’.
Aqua Fest is September 24th through the 26th, at Aquarena Center; along the beautiful shores of Spring Lake at the headwaters of the San Marcos River. Aqua Fest is a special 3-day event devoted to the discovery of career and recreational opportunities in water related fields with an emphasis on scuba diving. Aqua fest is featuring DEMA’s (Diving Equipment & Diving Association) ‘Be A Diver’ International Pool Tour. This event will include awards and recognition of the divers that completed the “Dive Around Texas” challenge in 2009 and recognize the many dedicated ‘Diving For Science’ volunteers who help to preserve the critical habitat of Spring Lake.
Aqua Fest is a free event with educational booths, exhibits and presentations by people who ‘dive for a living’. Students can talk about diving careers that include many state agencies including Texas Dept. of Public Safety, Texas Dept. of Transportation, the River Systems Institute, Texas Parks & Wildlife, USGS and US Fish & Wildlife to name a few of those attending. Any of those interested in trying SCUBA can take a free discover Scuba in the pool and receive a coupon for a Glass-bottom Kayak Tour on a return visit.
Thursday’s Bobcat Career Day will be from 12pm-6pm at Aquarena and focus on careers related to water studies at Texas State University. College students will learn about career opportunities with USGS, US Fish & Wildlife, Texas Parks & Wildlife, ZARA, LCRA, and many more. The DEMA ‘Be A Diver’ Pool will be open all afternoon for people to try out scuba diving.
The ‘Be A Diver Pool’ will be open all day again providing those interested in scuba a chance to try it out. Anyone under the age of 18 must arrive with a waiver signed by a parent to Try Scuba.
Saturday’s ‘Dive Around Texas’ and ‘Diving for Science Volunteer’ Recognition Day will be from 9am – 6pm and include the ‘Be A Diver’ Pool Tour, BBQ lunch, a demonstration by Dive Pirates on adaptive diving, a walking tour of Aquarena Center, the drawing for over $10,000 in prizes for the Dive Around Texas participants donated by all the major dive manufacturers, and two incredible Austin bands. The Flying A’s and The McKay Brothers each will be playing their own style of Austin music. of Austin, Texas.
