Florida Dive Center presenting Kill ‘Em and Grill ‘Em Lionfish event

(DiverWire) Divers Direct, one of the most recognized scuba diving retailers in Florida and the Southwest, is doing its part to help battle the growing lionfish invasion. This weekend, representatives from the Divers Direct stores in Ft. Lauderdale and West Palm Beach, Florida will be presenting what is being called the “Kill ‘em and Grill ‘em” event.

On Friday May 6, both Divers Direct outlets will host educational presentations at their stores. Specialists will talk about the lionfish and what can be done to eliminate or slow the growth of this invasive species. The following morning, divers will gather at Little Deeper in West Palm Beach at 8:00 a.m. (7:30 a.m. check-in) and with the American Dream II in Fort Lauderdale at 8:30 a.m. (8:00 a.m. check-in). Participants will have a goal of capturing as many lionfish as possible. Prizes will be awarded later that afternoon.

According to Divers Direct official Kathy Smith, “We are happy to continue in our support of REEFs Lionfish Derbies in the Florida Keys, and also very pleased to offer the same educational opportunities to concerned divers in the Miami/Fort Lauderdale and Palm Beach areas. Divers Direct wishes to do its part in bringing awareness to the dire impact of this invasive species on our reefs.”

Smith said that following the awards, lionfish experts will be on-hand again to demonstrate proper fileting techniques and offer some tips for cooking the lionfish. Depending on the number of fish caught, there could be a pretty tasty feast in Ft. Lauderdale and West Palm Beach this weekend.

Interested divers can contact Divers Direct – Fort Lauderdale (954-925-7630) or Divers Direct – West Palm Beach (561-775-0577) to request more information or register for the events.
