(DiverWire) The dive community has embraced injured veterans returning home and there is nice diversity of types of groups and diving focus created to share the underwater experience. One newly formed group is Operation Blue Pride, started by four ocean conservationists: Jim Abernethy, Sue Chen, George Schellenger and Shawn Heinrichs with the goal of OBP to embrace shark conservation while using the experience for injured veterans to heal and bond.
As this is a newly formed 501c3 nonprofit group, OBP helps train wounded vets both physically and mentally to become involved in this undertaking. But they need help from the dive community. As most of the divers are training to get their first C card, they are on government disability and the cost of their own purchasing gear is beyond their means. most often, equipment is rented by them personally which sometimes prevents participation due to cost.
SGT Chris Maddeford, Executive Director of OBP is hopeful that the dive community will step and donate used gear which is in good condition. He would like to assemble a full gear package for each veteran for their very own. Most of the vets are size L-XXXL for wetsuit, boots, fin measurement, and BCDs although any contribution all types of gear is needed and will be greatly appreciated. Especially if the gear has been recently serviced, but not necessary.
If you would like to help, but have nothing used to donate, of course dollars also a welcome. Besides being a tax deduction, it is also a great way to help a great group who has sacrificed so much for us. If you would like to help Operation Blue Pride,
