By Lisa Mongy (DiverWire.com) – The Formula H2O circuit is cruising to Ft. Lauderdale for a pit stop at South Florida Diving Headquarters. On Sunday, August 22, 2010, racers will be zooming around, doing laps on an underwater track circumnavigating the perimeter of the wreck Tracey. In depths less than 65’, spectators can easily watch from the infield while hovering on the structure next to Discovery Channel crews filming the event.
Celebrity racers will be participating as well. Dean Vitale with his Pegasus Thruster, will be defending his title from the inaugural event on the Vandenberg and the Shark Whisperer, David Ulla, is racing to help sharks. David is openly challenging other racers to race for a charitable or environmental organization.
There are various categories for small and large DPVs so bring what you have! One great thing about this event is that, instead of just being able to see the race car and hear the engine roar like a NASCAR event, here you can actually test drive a NASCOOTER. That’s right, the real thing.
Saturday, divers can go out on the practice boat where scooter/DPV representatives will be on hand for demos and a run on the same underwater course as the participants of the race. Take advantage of this unique opportunity to feel the adrenalin, and have the experience first hand. Both the practice runs and race event will be followed by drift dives over beautiful coral reefs, to make for two wonderfully full days in the water.
You can also join in the fun at the racer’s meeting and happy hour on Friday night at Ocean Point Beach Resort, starting at 6:00 pm and at the Sunday Award Presentation immediately following the dives.
