(DiverWire) Sunday, the Wreck Racing League returned to the clear blue waters of Pompano Beach, FL for the 2nd Annual Gold Coast Underwater Grand Prix. This year’s race track, the SS Copenhagen, provided a shallow water course for optimal safety and maximum action. Hosted by South Florida Diving Headquarters, Formula H2O Racing crowned Michael Vivona, powered by a Dive X Cuda DPV, the Grand Champion of the race.
The Gold Coast Grand Prix is the second installment on the 2011 Formula H2O racing circuit. For the second year in a row, the Pompano race boasted the highest attendance with a crowd inclusive of both SCUBA and freedivers, the Wounded Warrior Project, Divers for Heroes, and snorkelers who viewed the race from the surface.
Over the past year, the Wreck Racing League’s new action-packed sport, Formula H2O, divers racing around artificial reefs with Diver Propulsion Vehicles, has taken the world by storm. Earlier this season, the WRL brought Formula H2O to Rome, Italy and Key West, FL for a race around the Vandenberg.
Racing in the Modified Class, this is the second grand championship win for Michael Vivona of Orlando, FL. Last season, Vivona was the Modified Class Grand Champ of the Wes Skiles Memorial Shootout in Key Largo. First place winners also included, Mark Hughes- Expedition Class A, Dive X Cuda, Anthony Recine- Expedition Class B, Apollo, and Jordan Harvell- Recreation Class, SeaDoo.
