(DiverWire) Since it was first unveiled (underwater) more than a decade ago, the nine-foot tall bronze mermaid “Amphitrite” has been a must-dive attraction at Sunset House in Grand Cayman. Located just off-shore, the popular statue makes a lasting impression for divers and snorkelers. 
This year is the 40th anniversary of Sunset Divers, who played a major role in placing the statue in 2000. As part of the celebration, well-known and heralded bronze sculptor Simon Morris who created “Amphitrite” has released a 1/12 scale Limited Edition cast of the universally-popular bronze sculpture altered for the Sunset House celebration. Just 40 of these sculptures feature a hand-signed and numbered commemorative plaque, in honor of this 40th anniversary year. The scaled bronze sculpture is striking and is an exceptional collectible piece.
According to Simon, who was recently profiled in a story on the national Wire service Examiner.com, the mermaids hold a special place. “Of all the bronze pieces I have created, ranging from marine life to life size historic figures, the mermaids remain the most popular image with the public.”
Simon created and placed his first mermaid image, Emerald Princess, 23 years ago in Powell River British Columbia. The “Amphitrite” project came about after many years of planning by Sunset House officials in Grand Cayman. The statue has created the desired results, according to resort management and from Morris’ first-hand encounters.
“I rarely meet a diver who has never heard of ‘Amphitrite’, and often receive emails, notes and photographs from people who have enjoyed diving her,” he says, adding. “I’m always amazed how the simple act of creating something beautiful and placing it underwater for all to see has had such a profound impact on my life and career.”
