San Diego Oceans Foundation kicks off “Dive-a-Thon” this July.

San Diego, CA – Ocean lovers all around the world will begin SCUBA diving for dollars this July, asking for help as good environmental stewards in support of the San Diego Oceans Foundation (SDOF).  Proceeds from this fundraiser support SDOF’s programs, which include marine science education, pollution prevention and habitat and fish restoration projects.

Dive-a-Thon, in its fifth year, will begin July 1st though July 31st 2009, benefiting SDOF, an environmental non-profit that has been spreading their message of ocean stewardship for 25 years.  Dive-a-Thon is similar to a walk-a-thon, where participants collect pledges from their family and friends and then, instead of walking, they dive their way towards their fundraising goals.

Anyone can participate, anywhere in the world!  With a $25 registration fee, participants receive an event t-shirt and a personal webpage to fundraise.  Prizes are based on the most points earned from diving and fundraising in three categories, Competitive Divers, Social Divers and Non-Divers.

Even non-divers can participate this year and everyone has a chance to win prizes worth over $10,000, including exotic dive trips to Fiji and the Sea of Cortez, a titanium regulator, a dry suit, a dive computer, semi-dry wetsuits, dive lights, gear bags, local dive charter tickets and amusement park passes.  Sponsors include Matava Fiji Resort, Baja Expeditions, Whites Diving, Ocean Enterprises, Pinnacle Aquatics, Aqua Lung, Atomic Aquatics, Underwater Kinetics, Waterhorse Dive Charters, Marissa Dive Charters, Stahlsac, Ragz, Chammyz, Roddenberry Dive Team, Outdoor Travel Adventures, SeaWorld, SDG&E, Renegade Designs, Diverwire, California Diving News, and Outdoor Travel Adventures.

It’s a fun way to help, and help we need.  Today’s oceans have too much pollution, and too few marine animals.  SDOF’s mission is to promote ocean stewardship by leading community supported projects that enhance marine habitats and encourage the sustainable use of the oceans’ resources.

SDOF was founded in 1984 and has built a legacy of grassroots volunteer programs that increase the understanding of marine animals, protect ecosystems, and provide solutions to environmental challenges.  Through their programs, they encourage community members of all ages and backgrounds to engage in meaningful, hands-on volunteer work and help spread their message of ocean stewardship.
