DURHAM, NC –  Cage diving with great white sharks is in itself an amazing experience, but to do it in the name of a good cause could prove to be a once-in-a-lifetime chance.  That chance is here, and it can be yours.

Join Divers Alert Network® (DAN®) Aug. 29 – Sept. 3, 2009 for the Great White Shark Dive 2009, a fundraiser to benefit DAN Research.  You’ll spend a week aboard the Nautilus Explorer off the coast of Guadalupe Island, cage diving with one of the planet’s oldest and unchanging creatures.  The trip offers four full days of diving, so you can spend as much time as you like in the cages, experiencing first-hand the awe of the great white shark.  If that’s not enough for you, the trip also offers opportunities for shoreline expeditions to visit local wildlife such as elephant seals, Guadalupe fur seals and California sea lions.

“I’ve had the privilege of cage diving with great whites before, and I can tell you that I have never, in more than 40 years of diving, experienced anything like it,” said Dan Orr, president and CEO of DAN.  “The power and beauty of these creatures just exceeds anything in your imagination.  It’s almost surreal when you see your first one – your mind just can’t absorb that, yes, that is a great white shark and I’m in the water with it.  It is truly awe-inspiring.”

The Nautilus Explorer departs from San Diego for the overnight trip to Guadalupe Island.  Once on site, the cages are open virtually from sunrise to sunset.  If you don’t feel like spending all day in the water, the shoreline expeditions to visit local wildlife are alternative ways to spend a few hours.

You’ll be accompanied on the trip by Dan Orr and other representatives from DAN, and proceeds will go to benefit DAN Research.  A portion of your trip cost is tax-deductible.

“I can attest that cage diving with great whites aboard the Nautilus Explorer is a first-rate experience,” said Orr. “I’ve done the trip before, and we’re grateful for the opportunity to repeat the experience as a fundraiser for DAN.”
