(DiverWire) – Officials from the Caribbean island of Dominica have announced that the 18th annual Dive Fest event will take place next month. The popular annual event provides scuba divers with option for a mid-summer underwater getaway.
A recent news release from Dominica said this year’s event will take place July 8-17, 2011.
Dominica is rated as one of the top 10 dive locations in the world, with a variety of dive sites that feature dramatic walls and pinnacles, pristine reefs and incredible snorkeling. “I found Dominica to be an undiscovered treasure for scuba divers,” said Kamala Shadduck of SingleDivers.com. “We just returned from a group trip where more than 20 single divers enjoyed Dominica’s diving and unique non-diving activities. If you haven’t thought of diving in Dominica, you should because the island is what diving is supposed to be.”
The Dive Fest event is designed to educate divers about the sport of scuba diving and helps raise awareness about Dominica’s stunning and unique marine environment. The waters surrounding the island boast healthy, thriving reefs covered in colorful sponges and coral. Seahorses, frogfish, flying gurnards and scorpion fish are commonly spotted in Dominica’s waters, but are rarely seen around other Caribbean islands.
Dominica officials said there will be many activities during the event. Many are free or available at a considerably reduced rate. In addition to dive events, Dive Fest offers activities for non-divers, including whale watching, a children’s treasure hunt, beach parties and the hotly contested annual Kubuli Carib canoe race. The pinnacle event for Dive Fest 2011 is the Soufriere Kubuli Beach Party on July 17.
