(DiverWire) The newly formed Aquarius Foundation, dedicated to maintaining the operation of the world’s only undersea research station, Aquarius Reef Base, held its first Board of Directors meeting in a unique and appropriate location, 50 feet deep on Conch Reef in the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary.
“Since we support an underwater facility, we thought it only fitting we meet for the first time beneath the sea, in the research station.” said Debra Illes, Executive Director. In addition to the Board of Directors, Aquarius Foundation has assembled an Advisory Board composed of scientists, educators, film makers and other ocean professionals that will lend their expertise to the foundation.
“We are embarking on a new era for Aquarius. We are examining new opportunities for utilizing the scientific capabilities and communications technology present in the facility. For example, NASA NEEMO astronauts have become aquanauts this week as part of their NASA training.” added Ms. Illes.
