The world’s largest Closed Circuit Rebreather (CCR) diving event is coming to Grand Cayman again this week, marking the sixth anniversary of “Inner Space”. Hosted by Divetech at Cobalt Coast Dive Resort, more than 60 Closed Circuit Rebreather divers partake in this eventful week, diving the deep walls and shallow reefs off the North wall of Grand Cayman. All level of CCR divers journey to Cayman, diving at various depths based on their certification limits, from 100 to 330 feet on dives lasting for 3 hours.
CCR’s have been around for a long time – the original double hose dive apparatus – and have now entered the sport diving marketplace. They are a multi-computer assisted diving system with a closed loop (gas exhaled is re-circulated, scrubbed of CO2 and reused again). There are many advantages of CCR’s including moist breathing gas to minimize dehydration, warm breathing gas to minimize hyperthermia, small tanks to minimize equipment weight and gas costs, longer gas duration due to recycled gas, a constant PO2 setting to minimize decompression obligations and virtually no bubbles for silent, up close and personal encounters with the marine life.
Inner Space attracts many of the “Who’s Who” in the CCR world. Representatives from around the world are coming to show their products, new technologies, rebreathers, computer software, accessories, electronics and more, providing insight into the state of the industry on products, design features, decompression models and new updates on what’s coming.
Technology that will be on display for guests to test out include the products from Silent Diving, Diverite, IANTD, VR Technologies, Titan Dive Gear, Aerospace Lubricants, Inner Space Systems Corp, Shearwater Research, Stark Industries, Poseidon, Laguna Research, ScubaPro, Maxtec and Jetsam Technologies. CCR’s include the Evo, Evo+, Inspiration, Hammerhead, Sport Kiss, Classic Kiss, Megalodon, O2ptima, FX, Ouroboros, Titan and newly released Sentinel and Poseidon MK 6 CCR units.
A team of 4 field researchers will be here from DAN, conducting the first CCR technical diver field study. The tests are harmless and non-invasive including TTE (transthoracic echocardiogram or cardiac ultrasound) and Doppler, allowing researchers and divers to ‘see’ and ‘hear’ bubbles in the blood stream and/or heart after dives. This is very valuable research and will assist to further understand decompression models for the future.
For those not participating but are interested in learning more about Rebreather diving, you are welcome to join us any night and meet the industry leaders or join in on the pool demos to test dive a Rebreather. There is no charge for attending any of the lectures.
Celebrating the 6th year of Inner Space, it’s a great opportunity to learn about the world of ‘silent diving’ right here in Grand Cayman at Inner Space. Grand Cayman’s walls and vibrant marine life attracts the top experts in the diving world – come and meet them.
