(DiverWire) The completion of the DAN Diving Emergency Specialist (DES) recognition is a milestone achievement in a diver’s safety training. Now in its eighth year, the DES designation is a commendable certification divers earn when they have sought the training necessary to be prepared buddies and safer divers.
“The Diving Emergency Specialist recognition is a certification DAN is proud to issue to divers who have gone through extensive training to ensure they are prepared to manage diving injuries,” said Brian Wake, director of DAN education. “It is a true dedication to dive safety.”
There are three ways to achieve the DES certification:
- Certification as a Rescue Diver and certification in DAN Diving Emergency Management Provider (DEMP)
- Certification as a Rescue Diver and certification in DAN Diving First Aid for Professional Divers
- Certification as a Rescue Diver and certification in the DAN Basic Life Support and First Aid (BLSFA) plus:
- Emergency Oxygen for Scuba Diving Injuries
- First Aid for Hazardous Marine Life Injuries
- Neurological Assessment
This year’s promotion kicks off the new DAN revised training programs, which include updated American Heart Association guidelines, full color texts and streamlined course paths. Additional options are available for those who want to become DES Instructors or DES Instructor Trainers.
Divers who achieve the DES rating will receive a certificate of recognition, waterproof card and patch. Divers who complete this training between July 1 and Dec. 31, 2012 will also receive a multi-pocket zippered bag with a pair of emergency shears and an aqua-pencil with tether. The water-resistant bag is sized to contain first aid supplies and reference slates.
